Chronology
PredecessorVolvo S90

The Volvo ES90 (internal code V551) is a large electric vehicle produced by Swedish car manufacturer Volvo from 2025.[2] The liftback was set to be officially revealed on 5 March 2025.[3]

Design

[edit]

The Volvo ES90 is based on the technical platform SPA2 dedicated to Volvo high-end vehicles, such as its SUV derivative EX90 or its cousin Polestar 3.[4]

Key features

[edit]

Key features:

  • Core Computing: The ES90 features a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Tegra Orin configuration, providing around 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This computational power manages functions such as AI-based active safety features, handling sensor input, and battery management.
  • AI and Safety: The primary core computer enables a machine learning model with up to 200 million model parameters. This aims to improve customer experience and safety levels.
  • Superset Tech Stack: Built on the SPA2 architecture, the ES90 is the second car based on the Superset tech stack, following the EX90. This stack allows for over-the-air updates.
  • Safe Space Technology: The ES90 incorporates an array of sensors, including one Lidar, five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonics, along with a driver monitoring system. These systems are designed to detect obstacles and trigger proactive safety measures, such as collision avoidance, even in darkness.[3]
  • Aerodynamics & Efficiency: The Volvo ES90 achieves a record-low drag coefficient of 0.25, making it the most aerodynamically efficient Volvo ever produced, enhancing energy efficiency and driving range.[5]
  • Ultra-Fast Charging: Equipped with an 800V charging system, the ES90 can gain 300 km of range in just 10 minutes at 350 kW DC fast chargers, significantly reducing downtime during long trips.[5]
